Press Release on release of Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy in Egypt by Amal Clooney 23.09.2015

IMG_0196

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has today pardoned Mohamed Fahmy, the Canadian journalist convicted of ‘broadcasting false news’. Fahmy had been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment following a trial widely recognised as being a travesty of justice.

The measure was part of a broader presidential pardon covering 100 people currently detained in Egypt, including Mr Fahmy’s colleague and co-accused Baher Mohamed. Both journalists are expected to be released from prison shortly.

International counsel for Mr Fahmy, Amal Clooney, stated that:

I am absolutely delighted that Mohamed Fahmy and his colleague Baher Mohamed have been pardoned today. It has been a long ordeal, and we are grateful to President Sisi for exercising his power to pardon the two journalists. This is a historic day in Egypt where the government has finally corrected a longstanding injustice, and set two innocent men free“.

UPDATED: Amal Clooney’s client Mohamed Fahmy will be released Saturday

B9qqmy6IgAAYMKx

Al Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy & Baher Mohamed have been released on bail in Egypt and their trial has been adjourned to 23 February.

Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy will be reunited with his brother and fiancee on Saturday, his family said after a judge ordered his release ahead of a retrial on terror-related charges.
A statement posted to Fahmy’s Twitter account said his family “tried relentlessly” to finalize the paperwork required to get the Canadian journalist freed on Thursday.
“BUT it will be on Saturday…because it’s the weekend!” the tweet went on. It ended with the hashtag #Love.

Canada’s Minister of State for Consular Affairs Lynne Yelich issued a statement to say that the government welcomes Fahmy’s release on bail, but “we continue to call for his immediate and full release.
“The prospect of Mr. Fahmy standing retrial is unacceptable and Canada advocates for the same treatment of Mr. Fahmy as other foreign nationals,” the statement said.
Yelich added that Prime Minister Stephen Harper “has personally raised” Fahmy’s case of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, and that Canadian officials have discussed his case with their Egyptian counterparts “19 times in the last two weeks.”

Amal Clooney meeting’s request with Egypt’s president and foreign minister 06.02.2015

B9RNY0FCAAAnfpR

Amal Clooney has requested an in-person meeting with Egypt’s president and foreign minister to push for the release of jailed Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy.

She informed President Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi in a letter Saturday that she hopes to meet with him “as soon as possible” to discuss Fahmy’s case.

Fahmy has languished in an Egyptian jail for over a year on charges of assisting the Muslim Brotherhood, a group that El-Sissi has labelled a terrorist organization.

He was sentenced to a lengthy prison term in June along with Egyptian producer Baher Mohammed and Australian journalist Peter Greste.

Peter Greste was deported to Australia last week, sparking renewed hope that Fahmy’s release might also be near.

Amal Clooney cites Greste’s release in her plea to El-Sissi to release Fahmy.

“Since Mr. Greste’s release, Mr. Fahmy’s Egyptian cousel has been informed by Egyptian government officials that his release was to follow, and that it was imminent,” Clooney wrote in the letter obtained by CTV News. “This was to be expected, given that Mr. Fahmy has been the victim of the same injustice as Mr. Greste.”

Outgoing Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Fahmy’s release is “imminent” earlier this week ahead of his resignation.

Clooney had originally intended to meet Fahmy in Toronto upon his release this week, but she may alter her plans to instead visit Cairo if Fahmy is not released in the next few days. She says in her letter that she intends to visit “in the near future.”

Fahmy recently abandoned his Egyptian citizenship, making him a citizen of Canada only, in a bid to speed up his release.

Clooney’s visit will mark the first time she has met her client in person since her British law firm, Doughty Street Chambers, took the case.
