Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has today pardoned Mohamed Fahmy, the Canadian journalist convicted of ‘broadcasting false news’. Fahmy had been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment following a trial widely recognised as being a travesty of justice.
The measure was part of a broader presidential pardon covering 100 people currently detained in Egypt, including Mr Fahmy’s colleague and co-accused Baher Mohamed. Both journalists are expected to be released from prison shortly.
International counsel for Mr Fahmy, Amal Clooney, stated that:
“I am absolutely delighted that Mohamed Fahmy and his colleague Baher Mohamed have been pardoned today. It has been a long ordeal, and we are grateful to President Sisi for exercising his power to pardon the two journalists. This is a historic day in Egypt where the government has finally corrected a longstanding injustice, and set two innocent men free“.

“I now plan to visit Egypt to meet with my client and discuss the status of the case with Canadian and Egyptian officials. Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged my request and my visa application is currently being processed. I hope that such a visit can lead to a swift and complete resolution of this case.”
Amal Clooney will visit Egypt.
Al Jazeera journalists Mohamed Fahmy & Baher Mohamed have been released on bail in Egypt and their trial has been adjourned to 23 February.
Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy will be reunited with his brother and fiancee on Saturday, his family said after a judge ordered his release ahead of a retrial on terror-related charges.
A statement posted to Fahmy’s Twitter account said his family “tried relentlessly” to finalize the paperwork required to get the Canadian journalist freed on Thursday.
“BUT it will be on Saturday…because it’s the weekend!” the tweet went on. It ended with the hashtag #Love.
Canada’s Minister of State for Consular Affairs Lynne Yelich issued a statement to say that the government welcomes Fahmy’s release on bail, but “we continue to call for his immediate and full release.
“The prospect of Mr. Fahmy standing retrial is unacceptable and Canada advocates for the same treatment of Mr. Fahmy as other foreign nationals,” the statement said.
Yelich added that Prime Minister Stephen Harper “has personally raised” Fahmy’s case of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, and that Canadian officials have discussed his case with their Egyptian counterparts “19 times in the last two weeks.”
