Actor George Clooney and his wife, Amal, are speaking out for the first time together about their decision to sponsor an Iraqi refugee fleeing ISIS violence. The couple teamed up with George’s parents to help bring Hazim Avdal, a Yazidi refugee, to the United States.
In a wide-ranging interview for David Letterman’s Netflix show, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” the Clooneys share how their lives intersected with Avdal. George had contacted Letterman about Avdal’s story following their initial interview and invited him to film and meet both his own parents and Avdal.

MichRich – Oh my goodness, if you do not live in the US and regularly read the news or hear it I recommend that you go onto Google and type in current immigration issues in United Stated. We have a horrific situation here where immigrants — many of whom are refugees from other countries — are being torn from their families and returned to their countries. This is not about President Bush. It is about our current President and Congress.

Jackson.. OH my “goodness”, that horrific situation in the USA, is due to thousands of immigrants arriving and living here for years and years ..some with Medicaid and other assistant benefits paid by all of us. There are immigration laws you know, and legal ways to arrive to this country. It can take a few paperwork, fees, maybe a sponsor and wait months for the approval and visa, but no, seems like the world expect the USA to open doors to anyone without a visa or a green card. Really Jackson? Why some immigrants can be here legally, the way is support to be, and others can bypass the law ?
What’s the law then for? In Europe, illegal immigrants from Africa get deported. Why the USA should be different ? .
The law is for everyone, for everyone the same. It was the same law when Clinton, Bush, Obama and now. If someone was illegal immigrant when Clinton, it means that he/she has had a few years to do things right requesting permanent residence to become legal resident. There are plenty of immigration attorneys that work pro bono or almost free helping illegals. No excuses.

On another note it’s obvious Amal drove this that they take on refugee she’s just a kind beautiful soul I am so happy for her and George they both deserve each other

I was wondering the same thing – don’t we already know these things about the Clooneys? Maybe it’s just to keep up the PR while they deal with raising twin babies. A lot of celebrities do this – release constant info about themselves just to keep the positive PR going.

Events are often repeated in the news with new contexts. This came about due to the interview George had with David Letterman. We see the recycling of events often when different news outlets pick up something new.I do not follow it as closely as you ad others do so I do not remember if CBS News had mentioned this before.

Suzy- I think you may be looking too far into a statement she made. I just look at the whole picture of what she shared … that she, her husband, and her in-laws recognized they could help. That’s enough for me.

Anyone know in what context she has represented Yazidi refugees, aside from her political lobbying at the UN? She certainly isn’t a practising barrister anymore. Her lobbying and campaigning and speeches are all admirable, but it doesn’t detract from the truth that she sacrificed her career to marry George. She hasn’t practised law since.

Mariah- Do you see something different than I do when I got to the Doughty Street Chambers? It appears that she is involved in several things as a barrister. I would imagine that writing might be what she does more of these days. Barristers have a wide range of activities they are involved in.

A barrister is a specific term with refers to a person who practises law. There are specific legal activities barristers are authorised to do. In terms of “representing” Yazidis, Amal has not represented them as a barrister in recent years. She has done so as a public personality. What I am pointing is the sacrifice she made in order to marry Clooney. The notion that she remains a practising barrister is farcical.

Mariah- What makes you think her decisions were sacrifices? I think it is possible that when they decided to start a family she may have put some things on the table for awhile. The same with her decision to marry George Clooney. We really do not know. She has the type of profession where you can cut back on your choices of who and what to represent. She did say that they made a decision that having a family meant she would not be traveling to areas of the world where she could be hurt. That sounds quite prudent to me. She does a lot of writing and that may be what she is doing now.

Nadia: I beg to disagree. Jackson consistently (and admirably, from my point of view) risks people’s wrath on this site by calling out their assumptions, speculations and unsupported judgments. It might be a good thing for some of those who react to Jackson so negatively to ask yourselves why you’re so often so angry and defensive rather than more thoughtful and reflective.

Jaclyn-In the interview Amal states that the young man expressed his desire to study in the United States and Amal, George, and his parents decided to sponsor him. The University of Chicago is a prestigious university and he will receive a superb education.

In addition to this great act of kindness, George and Amal just donated $500,000 dollars in the name of the twins for Marjory Stone Douglas H.S where the horrific school shooting occurred. 17 killed. They are in support of the upcoming “March for Our Lives” event coming up. “Enough is Enough”. I applaud these heroic students who are leading this cause and also the Clooney’s who support and stand behind it.

Hmmm…I am going to guess she will wear a denim skinny jean, sneakers, and a warm parka (March weather is always unpredictable; windy, rainy, snowy, cold, warm…it’s anyone’s guess) or jacket. I think if the students create some type of “March for Our Lives” T-Shirt, then Amal and George will probably join in and where a T-shirt, too. Of course, just guessing on all of this. If it’s cold, I think she will wear a black beanie hat, too. 🙂

CoCo2, I agree with you with your emphasis on the importance of FOLLOWING THE LAW. Laws are important. If you follow them, well then, life is easy. Laws are for the good of all. How easy life would be for all if you simply “Follow the Law.” Your message was clear, supported by facts, and understood. The overall message: do what is right, follow the laws (NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW IN AMERICA), follow appropriate procedures, (first, and foremost the law), and life will be easy and not problematic for you. I certainly would not think to re-plant myself in Italy, UK, Guatamala, (or anywhere else in the world, and not have any consideration for the country that I am in, without following the laws and proper procedures. Period. Well said CoCo2. You sound like an honest and common sense person who follows the law.

Jacklyn- With all due respect you have not addressed the immigration or refugee situation in the US. That was my original comment that has somehow spawned to this. You appear to have reduced a very complex issue that has been working its way through the courts and appellate courts (not to mention a bipartisan Congress) to “follow the law.”
