Tonight Amal Clooney just made her Cannes Film Festival debut wearing a light yellow silk one shoulder dress by Atelier Versace. She was like a goddess. Beautiful and radiant supporting George Clooney and Money Monster movie.

The make-up was made by Charlotte Tilbury  and hair by Rod Ortega.

  1. Oh dear this is a disaster. Amal looks wonderful but totally misunderstood the brief. The logistics of wearing this outfit (and arguably the jewellery) make it all far too ‘try hard’ – it is simply not her place to outshine the entire crew of Money Monster. She needed to take her lead from the other female members of the crew and keep it simple.

      1. Yes she was, beautiful and elegant, but not for that event, since it was not her moment to shine. She needs to learn to step back a little sometimes. Last night was for the actors, the director and the producers of the movie and Amal is just married to one of the actors.

      2. You already wrote that Amal couldn’t hit the red carpet because she wasn’t in the movie. It is your perception and doesn’t correspond to the reality. Yesterday evening Amal was the center of the attention. You could hear the photographers calling her non-stop. It is George Clooney’s decision finally.

      3. Apparently Nati, I saw the walk on the red carpet live on TV and when they went up the stairs George turned to Amal and obviously told her to stay behind, she said “okay!” and stayed at the bottom of the stairs. She did look a little lost between the photographers and then an official told her to go up to the others. And please don’t worry I’m well in touch with reality. Honestly what a thing to say!

    1. Outshine the crew? Well, you can’t help it if you’re this fantastic! 😉 I think she actually drew the attention to the crew and thus to the film. I think that without Amal the film would have had that much less publicity, but she surely made the name of the film stick to the back of everyone’s minds, the name was repeated so many times during this posing session. Thanks to this session and Amal, I might even consider going to see the film. Me not being a film fanatic, without Amal the whole film would probably have gone unnoticed for me.

      1. I agree, Claudia. It was not her moment and she needs to tone it down when she is at an event when it’s the other women whose chance it is to shine as they are the performers. She is gorgeous and popular at the moment…do the classy thing and step back.

  2. What a beautiful colour of the dress for this event, how beautiful Amal looks. Such a super beautiful couple. Thank you Nati for this highlight after a very stressy day. Incredible.

  3. Just HAD to see this before going to bed and WOW, doesn’t she look fabulous! Oh my Lord, she truly looks like a goddess! Just breathtaking! Amal looks glamourous and so sweet at the same time. And they look so happy together; I love the way George leads her by the hand and tenderly looks at Amal sorting her dress. This just makes you believe in romance and magic. ❤

      1. But that is the point. George may have requested that the other actors to wear black to allow Amal to be center of attention.

  4. She looks really lovely in this colour and stands out amongst the black attire and red carpet, however I feel the train makes her look uncomfortable. I hope she didn’t fall!

    1. I think so too. Between the long train and high slit in the front, the dress seemed to have a personality of it’s own. If that was my dress, I’d get it altered to remove the train, and I’d have the slit stitched down quite a bit further. That said, though, she looked beautiful in that gown, and those Cartier earrings are to die for.

  5. Lovely dress and Amal looks great (despite almost having a wardrobe malfunction!) but it is a rip off of a dress Grace Kelly wore in the movie To Catch a Thief, which was set on the French Riviera.

  6. AC looks wonderful, adorable.
But this great Versace dress claimed too much attention. Maybe it was too long, so AC had to fight with her dress.
Shouldn’t the actors get most attention and not a dress?
Fashion queen or fashion victim? I am not sure …

  7. F-ing GORGEOUS. With the rest of the cast in black – Amal, who of course did not get the memo re dress code lol – stole the spotlight from Julia & Co. Radiant, dress magnificent, hair, make up … Ok.. Now I want to grow up & look like that!!!

  8. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! She knocked it out of the park with this outfit. Best yet. She looks like the movie star here….like a young Ava Gardner from the 40’s. Stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Hmmm. I think it’s ridiculous to wear a dress you have to fiddle around so much with. The first thing I thought was “quit stealing the limelight from the female stars”. The yellow made her stand out. I thought Julia’s dress was amazing. Yes, her dress was pretty, but she’s not the star here. I don’t know why this bugged me so much.

  10. Beautiful dress but I’ve never seen her have such a hard time with an outfit before! Every other photo shows her struggling, and it’s a bit awkward. A shame.

  11. Aww! It s a 10! Such a fabulous gown.. Gorgeous pale yellow chiffon. Suits Amal perfectly even when the wind blows.. She seemed to struggle a bit..But then totally worth it for the red carpet historical moment in Cannes! One of her best looks for sure!

  12. Stunning. Though she looks a little stressed behind the smile. Maybe because of the fact the dress seemed hard to walk in/to get caught on her heels?

  13. Now that I’ve seen the pictures twice, I have to add to my ptevious comment that Amal really does look lovely. She stands out in the crowd like a breeze of fresh air in a stuffy room. She looks just stunning and yet very effortlessly lovely and summery, like a beautiful butterfly. 🙂

  15. Nati can you tell us who releases the behind the scenes photo of Amal being primped by her stylists? It’s seems a bit intrusive – almost Kardashian like – but I presume Amal gives her blessing – if not encouragement to do so as we have seen a number of these behind the scenes shot before

  16. On this photo with other actors for me it is werid situation it is cast photo everyone is without husband and wife, except Amal, I like Amal so much but I must say you all have right it was time for movie cast time not for the couple contest, Amal should attend with George but not be presents on the photo with actors, it seems like she is actor star, she isnt. When she has her speak about law in tv or conferention any other star come and takes attention from her, she do it this time and it is for me quite unffair, this film is actors jobs, attention should be give for them.

  17. Ps. i just seen on tv relation that Woody Allen was with her wife on the carpet, but on the photo with his film cast he is without her only with actors, i think is a class, which Amal unfourtunalety should learn

      1. Nati, we all love her fashion and enjoy coming here. But there truly is an overwhelming response that she shouldn’t have stood with the cast, it wasn’t proper to take the attention away from Jodie, Julia and Catriona. She saw they were all in black and she would draw the attention. I don’t care if GC wanted her there, she should have said no darling, you go ahead.

      2. I hope you post this comment: When I first came onto this blog, it was a reliable resource for all things related to Amal’s fashion. (Thank you Nati, for that). With amazing research skills, Nati was able to source and ID many of Amal’s outfits.

Now Nati posts with super-hero speed the exact IDs on Amal’s outfits. Honestly, that sounds suspect. I believe that this blog which initially was a fun fan site has become an extension of Amal’s positive PR spin and Nati is provided outfit IDs directly from Amal’s people.

Nati, I have question for you: Most of the commenters, who are loyal and respectful regulars on your blog, have made a rational observation that Amal’s dress (style and color) and her presence on the red carpet posing with the cast is not appropriate.

Why is that is that a “slam” on Amal? Danny Moder (Julia Robert’s husband) was at Cannes too but he stood at the sidelines — as most of the actors’ spouses did. Please explain to us, your followers, why is that a slam? It’s about discernment, humility and good judgment. I would love to hear your thoughts.

        Thank you.

      3. Dear Diana, I am not related to Amal and I don’t have any contact to a PR agency. The presence of Amal on Cannes red carpet was a wish of her husband. He doesn’t need your agreement to invite his wife with him. She is part of his life. Danny Moder filmed his wife. It was his way to be with her in this unique event.

      4. @Nati, I did not suggest or infer that you are related to Amal. My comment was actually complimenting the wild popularity of your blog and that Amal’s PR/people were aiding in your outfit IDs as they have become lightening speed.

“He doesn’t need your agreement to invite his wife with him. She is part of his life.” Of course, I was not suggesting that either. I was stating that (even if) he wanted his wife on the red carpet, it would have been more appropriate if she excused herself and let the other actors take the spotlight. She is intelligent and astutely aware of her appearance. She knew that with that bright yellow dress, she would have been the center of attention away from the cast.

I know you admire Amal. But, please let’s try and be a bit objective. Many commenters here who never have been critical of Amal have pointed out this lack of judgment as well.

      5. Any PR people. Apparently you don’t read the discussions from the beginning. Amal always loves bright colors. George Clooney choose her and she is the woman of his life. It is Cannes, glamour and glitters and Amal was finally one of the best surprises. Perhaps the different stylists have to work together. Finally, I don’t “admire” Amal, but she is an exception in the celebrities world and I don’t agree with all her decisions. Until now I posted your comments.

      6. @Nati, I respectfully disagree with you. This your blog; your world.

Being in the business for years, I make an educated guess that much more is happening behind the scenes. Yes, she likes color. But again, that’s irrelevant. Gown selections are business choices. However, sticking one’s head in the sand does not make reality, untrue. Sorry.

Thank you for your time and opportunity to share my opinions and experiences on your blog.

      2. There is a thin line Nati, between insinuating and accusing. I don’t see anything remotely “sick” whatsoever in Diana’s comments, whereas you see alleged similarities to some sick remarks made by someone elsewhere. I can understand that she is upset because of this imputation. Not necessary. Not helpful. Not cool. Please post this.

  18. Wowzers!! For formal attire, I think this is the best AC has ever looked…right up there with ‘The Met‘ and her own wedding. The dress is perfection and the shoes are beyond fantastic. Hair and makeup are fabulous. Although I am not a lover of those particular earrings, I can’t find fault with the look at all. Brava!

However….you never, never, never, never…EVER…upstage the bride…even when you can.
It was not her night and I think she was inappropriate. She really should not have been in all the pictures with the cast….she seemed so out of place…and the color difference with the dresses accentuated that fact so clearly. The problems she had with the dress made it even worse….it was almost cringe worthy to watch in the video Nati posted. It was certainly not the right dress for the occasion unfortunately (for many reasons).

Of course AC should have been on the red carpet as she is a guest but she should have stepped back and allowed the cast to do their thing and then she and GC could have done their thing. I put most of the responsibility on GC for that one (but AC should have known and done better). GC is like a child showing off a trophy…to everyone…ALL THE TIME…forgetting that not everyone will appreciate it….or wants to see it. I would be very interested to know what the other cast members thought (especially the not so well known ones)…and their honest thoughts….not the smiles they had to show on the red carpet.

In the video, Jodie Foster speaking French – gotta love it. 🙂 She is a class act all the way….and I think she is sssooooo underappreciated.

Julia Roberts stepped up her fashion game as well. She looks great (let’s not even talk about that onsie she wore for the photocall!!!!!). Glad to see she took off her shoes….stick it to the Cannes shocking and sexist protocol that demands women wear heels.

    1. IB, couldn’t agree more on all your points.

Absolutely stunning dress, but it looked like the dress was putting up a fight!

Jodie Foster – in a class of her own. Refined, elegant, poised and sophisticsted. Carries herself so well. Has a presence about her.

Julia Roberts knew she’d get away with removing her shoes. It was such a deliberately delightfully naughty thing to do. Did you see how she gleefully told George at the top of the stairs, “I removed my shoes!!” And he looks down and laughs “did you??!”

I agree – behind the smiles, I’m sure there were some frowns about parading Amal like that. Where were the other spouses? It speaks ill of George for showcasing Amal in this manner – it is undignified to parade her around as though she is a trophy. But it serves the overlying PR philosophy of exposure as I suspect he has other agendas driving this decision. Nothing is simple and straightforward with George. Sometimes I feel Amal is being ‘used’.

      1. I saw one look from Julia. I’m sure they didn’t like it. It was Julia’s first time after a 30 year career….all attention should have been on her. However, I didn’t like her necklace nor that hairstyle she wears all the time. She could have looked more elegant.

        Liked by 2 people

      2. I remember Julia Roberts with her red gown in Pretty Woman and for me it is a timeless reference. Her beautiful smile is everything. Serge Normant made her hair personally, but she could be more “glamorous” and modern.

      3. Nati – re: Julia Roberts in red in PRETTY WOMAN….totally agree. She will never look better than that….and it follows her (for good and for bad). She also looked amazing the night she won the Oscar. I wish she had done her hair in an up do as well. There is a time to be casual but Cannes is not one of these times.

  19. The entire crew (George Clooney, Julia Roberts, etc.) are going to be on the TODAY Show (NBC), on Friday, May 13, begiining @ 7:00 am. EST. Nati. Is the bracelet Amal is wearing on her right wrist the same designer as her earrings? They appear to match. 🙂

  20. Amal’s dress had way too much fabric and the split was too long. The colour is gorgeous though. You can what the original (yes this is a rip off) of the dress looked like (just scroll down). Grace Kelly was the epitome of elegance and she didn’t have to fuss with the dress. Nobody did it better than Grace.

  21. Wow – that outfit and the makeup are perfection!!! One thing though: the highlights in her hair cheapen the look and do something weird to her skin tone. She would have looked even lovelier without the highlights and just the curl. Jet-black hair is striking, and it suits her best.

    1. To add to my previous comment: although I liked the dress, I agree with everyone voicing their opinions on the length of the dress and train – they should have been shortened to allow for greater ease of movement and less awkwardness. Also, the slit problem could have been easily remedied, preventing any “wardrobe malfunctions” (that photo is simply embarrassing). Finally, I agree that it is more than a bit odd that Amal is the only spouse posing in the red carpet photos for the cast and director, especially since she is not in the film.

  22. Amal’s dress was beautiful. In every way. And she was graceful and elegant in wearing it and even tackling the stubborn train. There is no dress code for these events. People wear what they want to. So since everyone else wore black she stood out. But that’s not a bad thing. All the other actors and Jodie are well known in the business. Amal doesn’t need to show anyone up. The other actors can hold their own. And I don’t think anyone’s ego was so big that they resented Amal being with them. In fact they all know Amal from when they were shooting ‘Money Monster’ in New York last year. She visited the set a few times and went out to dinner with them. Julia and George are very close friends. George wanted Amal with him on the carpet. He’s a pro. If he thought it inappropriate she would not have accompanied him on the carpet for pictures.

From most of the pictures I’ve seen of stars attending Cannes Amal absolutely stood out to me as one of the more elegantly dressed women by far!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Actually, no.

“There is no dress code for these events.” Actually there is. Stylists work with stars to select gown for red carpet events. To avoid the awkwardness of two stars wearing the same gown or seemingly similar gowns – word often gets out about who is wearing which designer. I used to be a styling coordinator for a very well-respected stylist in LA. The general public may not be aware of this – but it is a big deal when a big name star wears a designer’s gown.

Amal’s stylist knew prior to the event, what designer and gown each of the actresses (ie. Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster and Caitriona Balfe) were going to be wearing. Actually, I think it was a calculated and deliberate choice to dress Amal is a gown that would stand out: most likely, George requested that the cast wear black.

Disagree if you may, but just giving you all a peek behind the curtain.

  23. Oh and just one more thought from me. I too saw this dress and it reminded me of Grace Kelly. It had that look. But instead of a ripoff I would suggest that it possibly could have been “inspired” by Grace Kelly’s style. Ripoff sounds so derogatory. And having Amal wear this gown to Cannes which is right next door to Monoco, home to the late Princess. A lovely nod to Princess Grace.

  24. Wow- I have So much to say! First she looks stunning and the dress is gorgeous. Lets get that out of the way.

Let’s discuss this- this is Amal’s very first Cannes- and I am sure she, like anyone else on the planet would want to wear her best and enjoy this magical evening- its a cool event and I am sure she was wondering what she can wear to this first in a lifetime opportunity. So imagine a little girl going to Disneyland her first time and she wants to wear her favorite Princess dress- this is how I see Amal this evening. With that said- I think she is as annoyed and embaressed by her gown as we are uncomfortable watching her. Its a tad bit overboard for being the spouse- but we live and learn. The train thing did her the same way at the Oscars and poor George was on train duty all night!

Its interesting to see Amal’s shy comments to George as well as no matter how we assume she loves the cameras and the spotlight (i disagree) how she gets shy and sneaks peaks at the camera screen or stares at celebs or the action around her. She’s like anyone of us really.

The verdict- gorgeous dress and hair- love the color – she looks fab- is it overboard and high maintence- yes it is- but some ReALLLLLY gorgeous pictures came out of the event.

George is a class act- he is SO attentive to her and seems more concerned about how she is feeling and how she looks and if her train is OK- then the entire event. What a great husband- makes any Lebanese family proud 🙂 Bravo Habibi

    1. Soos, I totally agree with all you said. I will add a word about her jewels: they were to die for. They emphasize her graceful neck and compliment her skin tone and the delicate colour of the dress. I’m not a George’s fan and not Lebanese but, as a husband, he seems adorable and the kind of husband we want for our daughters or friends. Thank you Nati. This blog makes my day, each and every day you post something about Amal. And no, I’m not part of her PR team or family.

  25. The color of the dress and “most” of it is stunning. Slit is way too high and I feel badly for her that she had so much trouble maneuvering around in it. Must have been very uncomfortable and difficult for her to enjoy the event fully. Definitely this dress was not meant for so much moving around. Maybe if she had stayed off the red carpet the entire ordeal would have been easier for her and easier to watch. I think her makeup was excessive. Difficult to see her natural beauty through all the pan-cake 😦 She is beautiful and just does not need all of that to hide behind

    1. @Karine another grating comment. Just because a comment not 100% flattering does not constitute “jealousy.” It’s just a cheap, easy and frankly, not-too-intelligent retort. Let’s have an adult discussion and not just a throw around a word that has no meaning in this conversation (ie. jealous).

I am SO upset that a PERFECT DRESS like this was almost ruined by that irreverent, mean and uneducated TRAIN! For gosh sakes!! Can anyone please tell me WHO invented the train idea thing? Who in the right mind created a concept that a woman needs to carry such extension of her soul flying out of her self? Unless you are a vampire or a bat and needs to fly around, YOU SHODN'T wear this thing! It serves to nothing, it makes no fashion contribution, and what hapened here to Amal is the proof that she should had listened to George when he wispered in her years and sugested that he would chew off that train with his gorgeous teeth ( it must have been what they are laughing so hard in one of the pictures :0 ) I would had cut that thing off my back with my nails!! Ahhh i am mad!! hehe

    But this too shall pass…

I do have to agree that Amal stood out more than was allowed with this GORGEOUS drerss, but i blame it on the TRAIN. Had it been just the dress, all would have been flawless. No tension on her face, no much attention grabbing, pulling that culprit left to right… just softenss and caresss.. like the constant breeze that is in Cannes – this red carpet scene is right by the ocean, hello!!….It is a bit shame that such a detail made such a unique experience become more of The Heaviness Of The Stuburn Train than the lightness of the dress's beauty on Amal's gorgeous frame.

But… this too will be added to history…

So will be the most charming of all husbands… ah George !! You were great last night darling! 🙂 That is how a man makes a woman feel loved and so special… Ladies.. if you noticed what he did.. you know what i am talking about 🙂 ❤

And i have to send a huge kiss to the eternal Pretty Woman with her contagious smile ❤

    Nati…thank you!!! ❤

Reihe.

  30. Should there have not been a slit at the front of the dress, it would have been easier for her to walk around. Other than that, everything was PERFECT!

  31. Nati, I found comments about your blog on people.com:

On a website dedicated to homage of Amal- and most certainly run by friends/family/operatives of Amal- a Twitter feed ran that stated: “Saudi Arabia is repeatedly using US-made cluster munitions near populated areas in Yemen.” I still wonder what this has to do with Amal’s style issues which is supposedly the subject of this site. I also find it ironic that-as another blogger here pointed out-that any US arms may have been sold to Yemen by Amal’s uncle,a known arms dealer. It is also an established fact that Baria, Amal’s mother is anti-Israel.

The photos of her clothes and accessories appear quickly on the site to coincide with her actual appearance at an event. It’s as if they were taken ahead of the event for which these outfits are to be worn. Even when negative comments are (very politely mind you) written, the writers practically have to include an expression of love and/or adoration for Amal ( it’s very entertaining to read actually). But it is not a site for her “style” only, that is definitely obvious.

      1. Sorry Nati, I did NOT write those comment. Actually, shame on you for blasting me on the internet when all I did was diplomatically ask questions which hardly qualifies as being “sick.” Sick is going to the Daily Mail and reading comments.

    1. Actually, I am pretty upset at your accusation. You think I am the ONLY person who thinks these thoughts? Please, kindly read the comments of other blogs and fashion websites to see that many people are suspicious. Not just me. For someone who often asks for tolerance and peace on your blog and not to attack others – shame on you for doing the same.

      1. I don’t accuse you. I only say that there are some similarities with your comments. I used the word “sick” for all these people who are posting nasty /silly comments on the web against Amal with fake accusations. It is an independent blog here and tolerance is not to accept everything. Suspicious about what ? I am working hard to find the IDs.

      2. I don´t think it is Diana, the name are Amelie ( who wrote already on this blog, you remember surely) and Brenda.
Nati, please don´t accuse commenters when you are not sure 🙂

      3. Diana, ( and her friends) back off please!! Why are you here on this blog? Just to be an antagonist? Seriously, find something more positive to contribute instead of attacking Nait, even if “indirectly” and “inocently” as you are trying to come across, but i am not buying your intentions. I think you just wish to antagonize.

Nati dear, dont mind these sick people indeed! Most of us here appreciate your hard effort to bring Amal News and Style. Let the negs have their way elsewhere! It is YOUR BLOG and you can DO AS YOU PLEASE! if they are not happy they can easilly stop coming here to bring their negativity!

  32. First time commenting though I lurk off and on!
AC looks wonderful, makeup, jewellery, hair – lovely. I think she has a strong sense of her own style but going by their body language I am also guessing George likes to show her off- he is smitten, proud of her, protective & wants everyone to know! Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I’ve read comments questioning her short skirts but I also believe George loves her legs and likes to see them displayed. It may seem old fashioned to some but many women DO dress partly to please their men and I think AC does this quite often. If George disapproved she would respect his view.
Anyway she seems very sweet & they look happy.

    1. Lili, I completely agree! I’m also the same with my SO. When he especially loves an outfit I wear I make a mental note to do something similar again in the future because I like seeing him extra happy and proud. I can imagine Amal being the same way as the two of them seem to care deeply about each other.

  33. The dress is beautiful but with the very high slit, long train and even longer sash completely inappropriate for an event which requires a lot of walking and turning around in very close quarters with others and going up stairs. Amal – and others – are constantly having to adjust, move and look out for her dress. I don’t think that’s flawless style. It also drew even more attention to her, and away from the others whose talent and work this event was celebrating.

I’m with many others who feel this was not Amal’s moment. She should not have been part of the cast/director photoshoot for the people who worked very long hard to make that film. It was their moment – and esp Julia’s who hadn’t had a film at Cannes in 30 years, No other spouse was part of that photoshoot. If George wanted shots of him and Amal fine, but that’s done separately. In the theatre, there is a row for the people who made the film and the spouses are in the row behind. George may well have wanted the extra attention that having Amal as part of the cast photoshoot would get him, but IMO it was disrespectful to the other actors and director. And Amal could have, and should have, said no, this isn’t about me. There’s style and then there’s class. Sorry.

    1. Only a question, didn’t that also happen in L.A. and Tokyo, when they were promoting the film tomorrowland? I mean bringing the focus only to Amal.
Please correct me, if i am wrong. If it is possible, please friendly.

    2. Exactly, there’s ‘style and then there’s class.’ Not sure why Nati is getting so defensive that it’s George’s prerogative. That’s besides the point, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I think most people have been pretty civil and objective about sharing this viewpoint without belittling Amal.

Amal is not flawless, she’s human.

    3. I also believe that the dress was beautiful but was not appropriate for this occasion. If you watch the video and the pictures in all shots she is preoccupied by her dress and how to take the train and the slit out of her way to be able to walk. She was not at all relaxed and was so nervous by how the dress would look and she was obviously very uncomfortable walking with that dress. That was not so cool. I think that she should have worn a more relaxed dress that would allow her to walk comfortably. I think that Julia Roberts was outstanding and so beautiful. Her dress was very appropriate and chic and she was so comfortable walking. Whereas Amal was always in all pictures and in the vide so uncomfortable to the point that it is nerve racking and off putting. I think that her stylist should have done better than this. Again this dress in my opinion was not appropriate for this event.
