Amal Clooney talks human rights in Mideast speech 20.03.2016

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Advocate and lawyer Amal Clooney told an audience in the Middle East on Sunday that governments around the world should be vocal, consistent, principled and transparent about human rights.

Clooney was speaking at the opening of a government communications summit in the United Arab Emirates. She was a headline speaker at the annual event, which included the ruler of the emirate of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.

“The first piece of advice I would have from my experience is that governments need to be vocal about human rights,” she said.

She said Arab countries are facing “an unprecedented human rights crisis.” She urged that criticism of ruling systems be met with dialogue, not prison terms, and that protests be met with “crowd control,” not bullets.

“My advice to you is not only to be vocal and consistent, but also to be principled in communications about human rights. The fourth suggestion I have is to be quick,” she said. “Governments must be prepared to be transparent and get their message out first.”

Clooney mentioned countries such as Sudan, Iran and North Korea in her 12-minute speech, however she made no specific references to rights abuses in Gulf Arab countries or the humanitarian toll of the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen, which the UAE is taking part in.

U.N. human rights chief Zeid Raad al-Hussein condemned the “repeated failure” of the coalition to avoid hitting civilians after more than 100 people were killed in an airstrike on a crowded market Tuesday.

From Amnesty United Arab States

“The authorities arbitrarily restricted freedom of expression, arresting and prosecuting government critics. A new law on combating discrimination and hatred imposed further limits on the rights to freedom of expression and association. Security forces subjected dozens of people to enforced disappearance. Torture and other ill-treatment of detainees was common. Prisoners of conscience remained imprisoned following unfair trials. Women faced discrimination in law and in practice. Migrant workers were inadequately protected by law and faced exploitation and abuse. The death penalty remained in force and there was one execution.”

  1. I am surprised that she wore this dress in a Middle Eastern country, especially since she was speaking at an event like this, with royalty present. I always thought that women have to wear 3/4 length sleeves and cover their knees but do correct me if I’m wrong…

      1. I am prety liberal .. but i really dont like this dress for this event…. come on!! It is like she is going to the sunday market. A bit more thoughtfulness would had been appreciated. Besides, this dresss makes she looks away too thin!! . If i say stuff like that is because it has reached that point… she is looking too frail 😦 For the first time i feel like she has lost weight. But it could be the design of this dress’s shoulders (?) too high and protuberant to the side. I really dont like this dress and like it even less for such an event.

        But.. i digress 🙂

Thanks Nati for the great updates always! ❤

      2. I like the dress but not for this occasion. The dress is appropriate for a dinner with friends or a summer party but not for presenting the opening lecture at this conference. It does not look professional. She could have worn a suit as she has done in the past and it would be more appropriate. Also, she has way too much make up on for being taken seriously as a human rights lawyer. She looks more like going to a Hollywood party than to a professional conference. Another point is her body language when she presents. Again she does not look professional with an affirming voice and gesture. Otherwise she looks beautiful and well dressed by just not for this occasion.

  2. She looks fabulous and sweet, totally radiant. What more can you say? She’s a true inspiration in every sense of the word not just style and clothing! ❤ 🙂

  3. I’m so….so sad to hear that George and Amal Clooney will be helping raise money for Hillary Clinton. Based on their knowledge on how the world works, basic human rights and justice, I’m just so shocked that they would support a candidate that is more interested in raising money and representing corporations, banks and keeping the status quo. Our democracy is going through a crisis and for them to support the establishment that created these conditions is just so disheartening. Moreover, her decisions and stances (and flip flops) on foreign affairs have not helped a lot of the refugees and areas that Amal and George seem to care so much about.

    1. I am absolutely thrilled that Amal and George are doing such a splendid fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. She is the perfect presidential candidate right now, especially given that Sanders has no idea what he is talking about in terms of implementation his ideas and Cruz wants to carpet bomb parts of Europe and the Middle East and Trump is a lunatic. We are very lucky that Amal and George are supporting Hillary. They share a lot in common.

      1. I like Sanders better than Hillary. Hillary may sound like an “expert” in debates, but look at what her “expertise” has done to the countries in the Middle East and North Africa during her tenure as Secretary of State. Also, the changes that Sanders proposes with regard to education and healthcare are already a reality in many countries. Who’s to say the U.S. can’t implement those changes with the right leader?

      2. Lady- We have a Republican Senate that will make sure that Sanders could get nothing passed just as they did with Obama. It is laudable what goes on in other countries but we cannot model what goes on because the US is different in the way it is governed.

      3. Hi Jackson,
The representation of majority parties in our Senate or House can always change. Whatever party is in control of Congress should not be used to belittle the stance of a presidential candidate who wants change in the right direction. Otherwise – and to extend your reasoning to its logical end – why not just vote for a Republican presidential candidate?

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Furthermore, Jackson, what makes you think that Hillary will be any better than Obama (or Sanders) at getting anything past Congress, if there’s a Republican majority in either the Senate or House?

      5. @Jackson says:
” We have a Republican Senate that will make sure that Sanders could get nothing passed just as they did with Obama.”

Are you clueless? Clinton is a democrat, so you’re comment makes absolutely zero sense.
Also, you should be aware that All 63 seats in the chamber are up for election in 2016.

So, are you living in the US? I sure hope not.

      1. Lulu – You may have been asking a rhetorical question. I could not be sure. There is another democratic candidate named Bernie Sanders. He is a socialist with a lot of excellent ideas. What he lacks unfortunately and in my opinon is knowledge about how he would implement his ideas. For example, he believes that all college education should be free and the audience roars in appreciation because they are faced with heavy college debt but he does not describe what is involved in providing this and this is just one example of his socialist ideals that simply cannot be implemented without a well thoughtout plan that he can describe. He lacks knowledge that comes from experience.

    2. I agree completely. Unfortunately Hilary is not a progressive candidate. She is the quintessential Wall street and Washington insider. I think the Clooney’s support of her show just how out of touch they are with ordinary people. People in America (especially those under 40) want a change in a system that is controlled by the 1% for their own interests. The Clooneys, like the Clintons are very much part of that 1%.

      Liked by 2 people

      1. Monalisa- I disagree. What Hillary brings is years of experience and knowledge. The Clooneys — presumably both of them — share her convictions, at least enough of them to support her. The biggest issue is what would happen if Trump or Cruz were elected and which Dem candidate could not only beat one of them but also have the knowledge and experience to work with a Repub Senate.

  4. I like the dress but possibly not for a keynote speaker. The clip may not be representative of the whole speech but I would have wanted a bit more gravitas than what it does show. Still having a popular public /Hollywood type figure as your opening speaker has attracted media coverage and that is good, given the importance of the cause of human rights in the region.

  7. In regards to the dress, in the photographs of her walking you can see her knees, it’s above the knees and I would have thought a more modest length was called for especially given the other women are covered up. Amal is one of those glamourous women that likes to stand out and doesn’t follow the dress code of people around her, Personally I think the dress is too girly for her, she has strong features and this “pretty pretty” look does not suit her sophistication. She often does this girly poses a bit like she is trying to imitate a young girl, but perhaps that’s just when the photo is taken,

I do think it is a shame she allows herself to be exploited by make up artists and hairdressers on social media. The photo of her primping would be something I expected of a celebrity – a Mariah Carey or a Kardashian, Nothing wrong with looking good and it is obvious to everyone she has her make up and hair professionally done for public engagements – but the photos are tacky, She wants to be a hollywood diva and a serious junior barrister and I think she confuses what’s expected at a movie premiere with here serious working life. The primping and hair tossing and posing in court are a bit off=putting, Actually, the dress she wears in that photo is lovely on her.

    1. Yes I think it is a step too far having someone do your makeup for a conference presentation. I agree nothing wrong with wanting to look good but it’s a human rights conference, a conference, not a red carpet event. It feels pretentious to me and for me detracts from the seriousness of the issue. It feels to me that it is more about Amal than the issues. I’ve been a fan but I confess it is fading quite a bit.

    2. I think her poses are more what you see celebrities and models do. One foot in back of the other. It makes for a prettier picture. I don’t know if her heels are too high or what, but she looks very awkward walking in that one video.

    3. Casual Observer- The issue, for me, is not that the photo of her was taken, but that it appeared not only on this blog but elsewhere. We only see what we are given to see. If the media, including bloggers, Daily Mail, etc., chose not to publish these kinds of photos we would not see them. I doubt Amal allows herself to be exploited. It is the media who exploits her by following her every move, photographing it, and placing it for us all to see. I think Nati does a good job with presenting styles but why she posts the Clooneys in a car going somewhere in CA or Amal getting primped is beyond me.

  10. Wow – the hair and make-up is perfect — the best I’ve seen. She has impeccable taste in clothes. I Googled the Stella collection and that dress is the best piece. Looking at the photos makes me wonder just how much time goes into one of these gigs… speech: 12 minutes, hair & make-up 50 minutes, photos with fans: endless 🙂

  13. i think it is fantastic to have such a well known lawyer/celebrity bring attention to the topics concerned.
My first thoughts were that the dress looked very pretty but out of place for the event….more of a garden party type dress and that something sharper and more structured would have been perceived as more professional and appropriate.
On closer inspection of the dress I think the flowers are daisies, ( I may well be wrong as flower identification is not one of my best talents). I then looked up the meaning of white daisies and they supposedly are symbolic of common love. I may be reading too much into the dress but flowers are always associated with good and the dress certainly made her stand out and it is possible that she wanted to be perceived as a smart young woman who brings fresh perspective of peace into the world. We all need that right now so it might be my imagination😊, but I like the idea of it anyway.
Like the shoes and the bag too.

      1. Wow, I honestly can’t believe she censored the publication of her speech on freedom of expression! I had been interested to see her speech but couldn’t find it anywhere, now I know why. I don’t think her security would be at risk, it isn’t like she is saying anything particularly original or subversive. I am afraid the writer of that article has hit the nail on the head… The contradiction is farcical. This is all starting to smack of tokenism to me.

      2. To me it sounds like she had nothing substantial to say…sorry for that. She sould be proud that the media want to spread her word. Censoring her speeches and appearances doesn’t make sense to me.

    1. I don’t blame Amal. The media tends to air a 15 to 30 second snippet out of a thirty minute speech, and by doing so, trivializes the message, or more often, changes the meaning. Whatever her reason for “censoring” the speech, the author tried to make a scandal where there wasn’t one. Also, the author writes that she was “disappointed” in Amal, but I sensed an underlying contempt. How many journalists comment on an international lawyer’s weight and appearance? I don’t think I’ve read a professional article stating that an attorney is “attractive”, but “not beautiful” and “painfully thin.”

      1. I totally agree with you Anastasia, it is getting boring, either from this person who is supposed to be a journalist or from visitors to this blog. What is the point of tracking Amal’s knees or weight or nose or hair ….. What void are these people filling ? Every time Nati publishes a new post it is the same story again and again … Women gossip at tea time …..
Taking the content of this article for granted is just amazing to me not to say childish, just like scrutinizing every single photo of Amal to write something negative.
The author of the article knows very well that a 30 second snippet out of its full context is very reductive and sometimes changes the meaning, and it is Amal’s right to censor it.
She says she is disappointed in Amal ??!! What about Amal ? Don’t you think she is disappointed with this kind of media ??? Well, I suppose the only thing to do is to ignore them…..

And yes, we can feel an underlying contempt…..

Come on ! Put on your sport outfit and go run ! Working out helps put things into perspective and see what is important in life !

        Voilà ! C’est dit Nati !

    1. But why would Amal want to “control” her “image”?

BTW, the author of that article is a “he”, not a “she”…..very well known male journalist in India. He is the same journalist that we see in the clip Amal released interviewing her on the stage – given his credentials and direct exposure to Amal, perhaps his concerns are beyond mere “gossip”….??

  14. Hmm. So now my comments about how careful barristers need to be before they start publically commenting on their ongoing cases is starting to make more sense? I remember I was criticised for my comments on this blog by the same commentators who are defending her decision now. It makes perfect sense to me why she decided to not make certain addresses public. Of course it is ironic that it happened to be an address on the importance of freedom of speech (regimes also have ‘images’ to protect), but the irony notwithstanding I think she has realised she needs to be more careful with what she says in public about her work – and rightly so.

    Like

    1. You say that it makes sense to you that she made this decision because it’s best to be careful when commenting on cases. It doesn’t make sense to me, especially not after she has been so open about her cases before. If she did not want to discuss her cases, she could have made this clear beforehand. I don’t see why she would have wanted to cover up certain topics. I simply see no reason for blocking a broadcast of a speech.
But I do understand why she blocked the Q&A afterwards because you know that the usual boring questions about George or her lifestyle will be asked. That must be incredibly annoying so I wouldn’t want that either.

      Liked by 1 person

  15. Actually, come to think of it, maybe there is another reason for blocking the broadcast, namely privacy and limiting the public attention to her personal life and her work. Maybe she doesn’t want to be in the public eye as much as she wanted it before. We haven’t seen much candid pictures of her lately, only a bit when she is working. But on the other hand, it’s a bit contradictory because you know that this is a public event, that will be broadcasted. If you don’t want to be a part of that, then don’t agree to do it. But it’s a difficult balance to maintain I guess and there’s always scrutiny that comes with it.

  17. Couple of things : I wonder how much influence Baria has on amals public image considering she has a PR company?

Second – I think it is unfair to judge Amal based on the fact she has makeup and hair pic posts before an event. First of all which one of us woman wouldn’t get our hair and makeup done before a big event, an interview or family gathering . AMAL DID NOT POST THESE PICS of her hair getting done in the background – others did. She is not doing anything out of the normal – so why come hard on this issue that she gets hair and makeup done for an event?!!
