Amal Clooney stopped in Sri Lanka to meet with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other leaders before she is scheduled to return home on Saturday.
Amal Clooney, who also met with Colombo-based diplomats, said she will press for sanctions against the Maldives unless it frees Nasheed, who is serving 13 years in prison for the arbitrary detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed during his presidency.
His 13-year jail sentence was allegedly commuted to house arrest in July, but late last month police took him back to prison.
The Prosecutor General in a sudden change of heart had initiated the appeal of the ex-president’s sentence.
The High Court late Thursday rejected the state’s appeal.
Though the right to appeal was a constitutional right, as the appeal had not been filed by Nasheed, it cannot be accepted, High Court’s ruling had said.
However, the court was quick to point out that though the new 10 day window of appeal has expired, arguing an acceptable reason would still enable an aggrieved party to file the appeal.
