Amal and George Clooney lunched at the Locanda di Pietracupa on the greenest hills of Chianti Classico between Florence and Siena. They arrived with a white Vespa Piaggio. So romantic 🙂

Amal Clooney wore the same shorts suit as last year by Giambattista Valli

  1. Love the dress version, but even wearing the shorts version seems bit over the top to be wearing on the back of a motorcycle.

    1. I think Amal is quite overdressed all the time. Not a sign of good taste even though the clothes are of excellent taste!

      1. Agreed as well. I also recall these were short-shorts. I guess “fashion” trumps “common sense”. No doubt, she wore platform shoes/wedges with this outfit too (as she did with the pineapple pants earlier this week). She’s not wearing any protective gear – aside from the large helmet for her hair, of course. 😏

      2. True style is about the ability to artfully edit. Then edit. Then edit. Women of exquisite style always look perfectly sitution-appropriate. Never under-dressed and absolutely never over-dressed. Style comes first, then fashion.

      3. If one were granted the opportunity to have the resources that Amal has in terms of fashion (ie disposable income, free gifts, style advice etc) how many of us would wear the same items?

I would love to have a closet that personifies — Rosie Huntington Whiteley’s street-style edge and sexiness, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s refined editorial clean minimalism and Olivia Palermo’s whimsiness.

Translation: I would probably take one or two of Amal’s sunglasses then leave the rest.

      4. Seconded, and lillyjones’ postings as well! Amal turned into a mere ‘fashionista’, overdressed in 90% of all her pap-strolls / outings. Thus being farther from ever having the slightest chance of becoming a ‘style icon’ than she was before in her life.

        Fashionista: yes.
        Style icon: no way.

      5. @nati3873 I must beg to differ on that point. Elle, Vogue and Harper’s are definitive sources of fashion. However, many magazines work with assorted entities including, public relations agencies where they have mutually beneficial arrangements where they are not always completely honest.

I know I work for one.

      6. Meaning that magazines such as Elle, Vogue and Harper’s editorials can be bought …

        food for thought

      7. I think it takes a lot more than being a fashionista and having an interesting style to become a style icon. I think she definitely is a fashionista but to me she’s not a style icon. Some of her outfits are definitely a miss and then others are totally fabulous. Her style is a bit too inconsistent. But no one can say she wears boring stuff because she always puts together interesting combinations. 🙂

      8. Just wish to clarify that I agreed with Nereida about the overdressing, and not that Amal is a fashion icon. I think she is an icon in a different way but not a fashion icon. I’m also not sure that having the endorsements of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and the likes are sufficient to qualify someone as an icon, given their interests in product/brand placements these days.

  2. She’s wears a hat and George wears a cap — the dress is short 👏🏻👏🏻 can’t imagine riding Vespa Piaggio —

  3. Oh to be in Tuscany on a warm summer day.
Chianti is in the countryside, so they are probably staying in the area. I think both are dressed appropriately casual, although in her case very high end casual, especially considering someone always photographs them, as did indeed happen. Notice she did not pose.
    I enjoy your blog immensely.

  4. Great style icons to mention lillyjones! 🙂
Especially Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Now there’s a woman who never “sucked up” to the paparazzi! 🙂 Loved her style!

    1. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy avoided the paparazzi like the plague. Her style was so clean, elegant yet so powerful that even years after her death – there is fashion chatter about her timelessness.

Wearing the latest trends and loud look-at-me fashion is the antithesis of elegance and refinement.

      1. You are so correct. I was “one of them” who went out to buy every magazine Caroline Bessette-Kennedy was on. She would look at the paparazzi with those steely blue eyes and say, “please don’t get so close to me”. She said it sternly and matter of fact. I liked how she blatantly ignored them. I agree with your above comment. All of it so well stated. 🙂

      2. Hey Nati, two things. 1. Did you see the latest news? Amal has been selected by Vanity Fair to be labeled as one of the best dressed. Even “upstaging George”. 2. It would be cool to “launch” or “relaunch” a site featuring Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Her style, hair styles, make up, etc. It would be interesting to see who would all chime in. You are so correct, lots of nudes & blacks, some Asian flair at times, and wonderful red lip stick! She wore Ruby Stain by Bobbi Brown (I know because I bought it). Think about it. Not to throw more work your way, but you have a talent & creativity that’s incomparible….consider creating a Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy blog. Thanks to Lillyjones for reminding us of this classy icon who’s life ended far too short.

  5. @Nati3873: You, some of your commenters, Vogue, Elle and Harpers Bazaar have any right in the world of dubbing Amal a style icon if her level of dressing meets with your definition of an icon. Just like i and others have the right of setting higher levels for this particular term, and we even do explain the reasons WHY she fails by far of getting even in the range of becoming one (unless she changes her approach by 180 degrees, that is).

One should take into consideration that these fashion magazines you quoted need to sell their papers, which is why they regularely hail to anybody halfway fitting as blueprint for their readers’ imagination. Won’t be long and she will be replaced by the next stunning hottie. Remember the shortlived hypes about ‘Lupita’? ‘Jessica Chastain’? … There you go. Especially since George’s status as A-grader in Hollywood has since some time quietly dropped to B- or even C-grade, as most of his recent films tanked spectacularely. Amal’s lack of success in her profession does not help either, i am referring to the recent developments of the gaddhafi son’s case here.

Icons do not continuously fail – or marry those heading south the fast lane.

    1. CORRECTED VERSION – Nati, please post this version instead! Thanks 🙂

Zalloy Zalloy…Hello back Jon321!??!! You know Zalloy, there was only one person here who would make afirmations on their own as if it was the absolute truth… so you remind me so much of jon321 that i had to come back! Reading your comments (and some others)… i have a feeling she is back… her “haze” is in the air….

This is the deal Zalloy… and the ones making such a big importance on the “ICON ” thing:

Most of us don’t really care if she is an icon, or no icon, who cares!!! It is not that important!! Who is authorized to decide such things anyways? it is silly! The important point is that she stands out no matter what she wears, no matter what she does, that is what we come here to see – how she unpredictely dresses day after day – Hits and misses are her own and many actually identify with them. So no big deal, i actually enjoy that she brakes fashion rules here and there and misses here and there. It conforts me that she is not that paranoid about perfection, but instead has some sense of humor about it.

Now, for you to afirm that George is a B or a C?? list?? Let me laugh at that because that is so NOT true!!! His latest movie TOMORROWLAND made almost 50 millions first weekend in USA ALONE, and has grossed $204,356,825 so far, and still going… THAT is NOT a failure and dont worry it will make so much more! Besides, an actor cannot sale a movie on his own. There are many things that are involved. But even if it was a failure, George is seating on a great seat of accomplishments right now. He has won respectable , distinguished awards and prizes. He produces, he directs, he writes, he acts, he is a multi-enterpreneur, humanitarian, he is a talented business man and his success have already hapend long time ago and he is only 54 and looking hot and well. He has nothing left to prove and he is filthy rich too!. So, seriously, dont kid yourself with your failure tags because it would seems just like hater jalousy.

Same thing for Amal… for you to be assuming she failed a case that has been annouced her involvement on only hours ago, and on which is not even the lead, then that realy transcend venting jalousy or some resentment on your part? Perharps you dislike her client? Or all of them?? Fair enough if you do, but please, dont try to pass on pseudo-truths here, because there are some here who really resent that kind of cheap, no basis/ground false statements and afirmations. Get your George facts right, because you are missing a lot of numbers 🙂 Check out also Monument’s Man, Argo and etc….how much they have grossed and you shall see that he is not as off on THE list as you may assume, and the revenuews door is not over, there are much yet to recup.

I appreciate seeing Amal and reading her stuff, not because she is tagged as icon or d this or that.,. i can care less for all those name calling, they mean nothing really, and who decides for them means even less to me, there is no sacred fashion autohority to decide. So to each their enjoyement. I enjoy the fact that she makes me feel like taking better care of myself and wear all the nice stuff that a lot of times i had saved for a special ocasion. Now, after seing Amal wearing her outstanding dress to…lets say… go to the post office, i am also doing the same. Mine are not as expencive but stilll i had saved the best ones for that special ocasion. But why save them for special ocasions? Why not wear them any moment you feel like it? The best day is NOW, is today, no time after today is garanteed, so better wear them NOW! 🙂 We are never over dressed when we feel great, when we feel worthy, when we feel that we deserve it all. She feels that way and that is why she seems to be overdressed to some. Maybe some of us needs to stop under-dressing a bit, and start dressing more like we truelly feel inside…aha!!! THAT is the tricky part!

  7. The restaurant looks nice, so I can understand her reasoning to be a little dressier than just shorts and a T. However, that outfit does look a bit over the top to be worn on whatever George was driving and with a helmet.

The satchel and the sunhat make the whole look relaxed and perfect for a summer trip in Italy.

  10. Hey Nati, check out the latest pictures of Amal and George out for dinner in Lake Como. She’s wearing a gorgeous coral full length tank style sheer dress. Posted Thursday August 6. Amal’s hair looks a lot shorter in the back…it’s probably curled. & styled, giving the appearance of being shorter. Check out the new pics. 🙂

  11. Hi there, I am writing for the first time –
because finally some people came up with some comparisons: Carolyn bessette – just one example: one could continue forever:
    Charlotte Gainsbourg, Isabelle Huppert,
Tilda Swinton… And to go to the past: Jackie and Audrey. What’s the difference to Amal: effortless chic. She always looks the same: same hair, same makeup, same smile….
Being in Turkey and some other Near East countries I have seen ten thousands of Amals. She looks like her existence is centered around what to wear and how to look. And what comes out: always the same.
Under contract with specific designers or not
It takes an enormous period of time to always look the same. Well, her idea of perfection. However, she might enjoy it.
If not, we might see some different aspects of het personality someday: different looks,
Hair, makeup….. Different poses. Maybe even effortless, light, easygoing….
    Carolyn, please help!
