Sabbatical break? She has 11 cases going on! How is this possible?

I don’t know if she is taking a sabbatical, but it is certainly possible for these reasons:
1. Eleven cases is not a lot. It’s more usual for counsel to have upwards of 30. Cases have their own timeframe, they often require a flurry of work at certain times and then it’s quiet until the next deadline.
2. I doubt she even has 11 cases – we only know this from GC’s comments and he has, to date, been wholly unreliable with respect to her career. I suspect she has fewer.
3. From what we know, she is playing minor roles on the cases she is publically known to have – so she can easily contribute to legal research and then drop out of the process.
4. As I have said for some time now, I don’t believe AC leads on any of her cases, and she seems now only to take high-publicity cases so she is unlikely to lead on them anyway given her call. If she were doing some junior cases more apt to her year of call, she would find it hard to take a sabbatical because there would be real clients physically depending on her alone to show up in Court.
So if it is true that she is taking a sabbatical, then – given her comparatively scant work commitments – this is perfectly possible.

I found this 2011 paper on barrister employment from the UK.
It’s called ‘Barristers’ Working Lives – A Biennial Survey of the Bar 2011′.
It’s a pdf so I can’t add it here but you can Google it. Very interesting.
There are two types of work situations – those who are in the ‘Employed Bar’ and those who are in the ‘Self Employed Bar’. I have no idea which group AC was in.
Anyway, page 34 talks about workload of a typical barrister and states:
“Barristers in the employed Bar working full time work an average (mean) of 46 hours per week while those working part time work an average of 29 hours per week.
Controlling for mode of working, barristers working full time in solicitors’ firms work the longest hours (mean average of 51 hours) compared to 46 hours on average in the CPS and 43 hours in the GLS. Elsewhere in the private sector barristers work an average of 48 hours and elsewhere in the public sector 44 hours per week. The numbers working part time are too small to allow analysis by type of employer.”
“The self-employed Bar is almost exclusively a full time occupation/job. Just one in ten barristers inself-employed practice do less than 37 hours per week with only four per cent working less than 30 hours per week. Half of the self-employed Bar work 50 hours or more per week with an overall average (mean) working hours of 53 per week. Barristers whose income is 90 per cent publicly funded or more typically work 55 hours per week, compared to 50 hours per week among those where none of their income is publicly funded.”

AC is self-employed. Barristers at chambers are always self-employed – the employed bar refers to the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service), and barristers employed by solicitors firms which are largely commercial practices, these make up a minority of practitioners. And Doughty Street does predominantly publically-funded work.

I posted this a while back. From my understanding, AC is not teaching a whole course/semester at Columbia but is merely a guest lecturer in Professor Sarah H. Cleveland’s Human Rights course. AC spoke about human rights litigation to students in the school’s Human Rights Clinic. Columbia says this: ‘To bridge theory and practice, the Human Rights Clinic provides students with hands-on experience working on active human rights cases and projects.’
Columbia’s spring semester began January 20th, 2015 and ends on May 15th (exams included). Thus, if I’m not mistaken, AC was in LA in the month of January and didn’t move to NYC until late February/early March. Thus, she cannot possibly be teaching an entire course (on campus) as is claimed in the news.
My *guess* is that she presented in this course 2-4 times but she is not preparing exams/grading/etc. As the students have been given a gag order about her, not sure if we’ll know the extent of her involvement for sure.

The dress in itself is a real hoot.
However, if you look closely, the chestal darts are completely mistconstructed and pointing anywhere but the peak of her bust (in fact, the darts are pointing skywards). So, as a fashion pro, i herewith conclude that this gown is not bespoke for this client but off the rack, obviously, meaning: the unaltered or minimally altered runway version. The only alternative explanation would be a rather visually handicapped seamstress ;-).
The accessories are fabulous. While the half-updo is a nice change from the usual style, it looks unkempt und untidy. The lipstick should have been somewhat deeper or different in colour for creating a colour-counterpoint, as should have some earrings of more spectacular colour (though not necessarily grander size).
Overall impression: so so …

I agree with Erika about the tailoring (or lack thereof) and the half-updo. Also, I think the color of the dress makes her look somewhat pale (see this photo: https://amalalamuddinstyle.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/290ec4a000000578-3096100-mellow_yellow_his_barrister_wife_looked_incredible_in_a_satin_ha-m-71_1432554739871.jpg ). The color is too “warm” for her complexion – it would suit an Autumn brunette or redhead (strangely, seems to wear a lot of Autumn-appropriate colors, and they don’t really flatter her as much as cooler colors).
Otherwise, she looks beautiful (as usual).

Let me also say that, outside of the tailoring issue and color mismatch with Amal’s complexion, this is one of my favorite dresses. I’d buy it for myself (and already have a similar Galliano dress from the ’90’s in my closet)! 🙂

I agree about the bust dart being misplaced. I think silk satin is hard to wear because it clings and gets very static-y, which is exactly what has happened here. It looks like it needs better lining.
In theory a nice dress, but not sure it wore very well off the hanger here.

I agree with what you are saying about silk satin being very difficult to wear. In some of the pictures, the dress flows so lovely…beautiful. However, in other pictures, it does cling and doesn’t flow well. To me, it looks much better in the still pictures rather than in the ‘moving’ pictures or in the video. For example, in this picture below, it really makes your eyes go to where they shouldn’t go. 😦

IB – it’s just the fabric. Silk satin moves around a lot, if it was made any tighter it would cling and probably tear.
Darts are positioned in specific places to give shape, and yes these are too high.

I agree with you about the make -up! i hate it! Too heavy on the foundation, to pancake, made she look older and i dislike the color, faded her face too much:( I doubt this is the same make up person that did her for Met Gala. I also agree with the hair being too un-kept, the dress deserved a better hair due. But the dress….WOW!

It is hard not to see it when you work in fashion business, although people will immediately start criticizing us for being up front with our obsevations.
I would add also, that her hip and pelvis bone are way to visible and that the dress is just a bit too long for her height, hence, as you ve said, it wasn t custom made, but off the rack.

This georgeus Galliano gown is a bias cut and it is especially difficult to construct perfect chestal darts on diagonal cutted satin silk. So I don’t think it is a handicapped saemstress :). Rather indeed a wrong placement for the darts. She has very thin waist,no hips and for her physique relatively big breasts, even more difficult to make a perfect dart construction. But I would expect from custom made Galianno 🙂

Yes, it’s slightly more difficult on bias cut but hardly that much more difficult. This is no way custom made for her, the fitting just isn’t right, and any competent seamstress would have got the dart placement right on this dress. She obviously didn’t have another fitting to allow for final alterations. I bet it was made from measurements. It’s much more difficult to get placement right from just measurements because you can’t see the shape of the bust.

I’m not a vegetarian, I eat meat, I buy/wear leather, and have no probs with animals as food/a resource as long as (a) they are treated with respect while living, and (b) humanely when dying. And all of the animal is honoured and put to practical use. And I source my meat accordingly and I’m fine with that.
Wearing endangered skins – animals trapped in the wild or farmed specifically for no purpose other than to provide skins for the so-called luxury-end fashion market – is a whole other, deeply depressing ballgame. Reptiles, in particular snakes, lizards, crocodiles, are seen by elements of the fashion industry, and those who buy the end products, as just another fabric. The process that accompanies getting the best quality reptile skins is utterly barbaric. These are not skins left over after someone in some part of the world has used the meat to feed/clothe their family, they’re skins farmed for the sole purpose of feeding the hollowest and shallowest and most uncaring of needs.
That Amal would be aware of the horribly cruel, blood-drenched journey these creatures endure to feed her need absolutely disgusts me.

One more thing, look at the price of that clutch – $5,450.00. That’s a powerful message to those who deal illegally in the reptile skin trade. They’ll be delighted that someone with such a high profile is endorsing what they do.

Very Smart remarks Morna 🙂 I have been personally a number ONE fan of Amal since day 1 back when GC met Amal (wether it was in London or lake como is really irrelevant at this time) but would truly strikes/shocks me now the most is the level of shallowness and superficiallity my fellow native Lebanese (share the first name) has fallen into !!! It’s a shame let me put it this way…Not only she’s become a fashion victim and a blind fashion follower but also sending out the wrong massage to all generations of women alike… Not to mention her anorexic figure and please don’t anyone tell me she has that magical metabolism… I am a health care professional and know a lot about food disorders & body images and she is that perfect example! Am sure we all remember that one picture dated October 2013 where she’s wearing silver Chanel boots, a red silky dress and a grey coat on top with oversized red color hoop earings showing her exiting some hotel in London with George in the back…look closely at her face and her whole figure and you will see for yourself how much pounds she’s lost…at the end that’s her decision and she’s a grown up woman…but again I am highly dissaponted in what I am seeing wether it’s this endless parade of fashion runways or the dragging along of all her family members be they her immediate family or respectful relatives… Am no psyhcoanalyst but that shows a deep rooted hunger/thirst for lights camera action…you can figure out the rest! And George on the other hand is so smitten and blown away by her that I realize he is encouraging after all this great show business…given the fact that they are and still remain such a very high profile and a power couple as well:)) I would LOVE to see both of them do more humanitarian work and attend more charity events for a change….after all isn’t that how they originally met “at least that’s what the media kept stating” that they were introduced through a mutual friend while atttending the so called “Satellite Sentinel Project” conference George was involved in to end the ethnic cleansing in Darfur,Sudan region… Am more than curious and excited to see/wait if my prophecy will come to life! Amal – my point exactly about the first photo of her in that red dress. Anyone who says she has always been this skinny needs to see that photo – she was slim then, and had a healthy figure, but nowhere near as skinny as she is now. It’s sad to see someone so educated not have the ability to resist damaging and vacuous social norms of ‘beauty’. Being this skinny is not beautiful because it is unhealthy.

I don’t understand the fascination with animal skins, either. On the one hand, I don’t have an issue with people buying vintage pieces that are made with *certain* animal hides, since that prevents them from going to waste. On the other hand, continuing the slaughter of animals for fashion is so vulgar. The same clutch could have been made with more ecologically-conscious and humane materials – for instance, straw can look golden. Blonde wood, too. And, that’s without even coloring the pieces….

Stunning dress. I often worry about her walking in those heels but with this dress more than ever. She always looks incredibly stunning to me but I do think the lipstick shade was a bit off this time. Would have liked a warmer red as I think it a better contrast to the gold and more suitable to her complexion.

She hasn’t always been skinny. The first ever photo of her on date with Clooney wearing that red dress and silver boots – she was MUCH curvier. Just look at her legs and thighs in that photo, even her bust and waist line, and then compare that with more recent photos. There is no denying that she is losing weight. It’s a shame – I thought a barrister wouldn’t succumb to the pressure.

The gold color not going with her complexion would help to accentuate how tired she appears. For instance, notice how Amal always looks wonderful and fresh in black? Conversely, as an Autumn, when I wear black, I tend to appear more “tired” than usual. If she had chosen a different color dress, or at least a different color near her face – one that suited her complexion better – the effect on her appearance would have been different.

Lady, i think the make up was the culprit. I really dislike this make up, too heavy, pancake, made she look pale. I think this must have been a different make up artists and for sure a different type of make up. I have never observed such heavy foundation on any of her pics.

Because i am an amateur photographer, i need to say this to the “photographer” who took these pictures: let me rip your “photographer” license and throw away your equipment, before anyone else identifies you. That will save you some shame, ok? I do not like these pictures, OK? Poor angles, unfortunate momentums, even a stupid-phone would had snapped better ones by itself, (imagine a smart phone! hahaha). You practically ruined this gorgeous outfit and moment!! So, no glory to you ;(

I concur with comments related to her penchant for favoring exotic animal skins , hence find her less appealing. It is truly abhorrent in this day and age to support such cruelty not to mention the eco system turmoil. She clearly sees herself from an imperial light. Otherwise, she can be an edgy and elegant dresser.

Maybe she is only working part-time while she is living in the US with George, hence she only has 11 cases. George hinted that they will move to the UK soon, so she might go back full-time when they go there. I am always astonished how people on this site are so eager to denigrate her job. She has never given an interview claiming to be a genius attorney or what her workload is yet some people on here seem to “know” what she does when she is a way from the cameras. Maybe it is just trolls by another name 🙂

I should like to respond to this, Daisy. No one has claimed to “know” what she does or denigrate her work. Has it occurred to you that some of the posters here may in fact have expertise in this area and are therefore speaking of what is “likely” from their not inconsiderable experience? Furthermore, it is not difficult for those with experience to work out what Ms Clooney is doing professionally by a) consulting with colleagues, b) reading the newspapers – Guardian Law section is particularly good, I would recommend it; and c) reading court listings. Such commentators would hardly wish to ‘denigrate’ her work. To call them trolls is highly dismissive and somewhat ill-considered.

And one other thing – full and part-time have no meaning for barristers. They do not work according to such set hours. And no, one does not need to be a ‘troll’ to claim to know that – just a little experience.

Hi Daisy – who are you referring to? If this is directed at ESR I would just say that I am a law student in the UK and I read this blog because obv I am interested in Amal and think that she is a great role model for students like me. I am starting to get a little disillusioned with her, just a bit, but one of the best things about this blog for me – aside from the style, of course – is reading comments from people like ESR.
I don’t know if you follow this blog, but ESR is obviously a lawyer though he/she has never said so (I don’t think). It’s obvious ESR is somehow involved in the legal profession because they know things which only someone in the business, or very close to the business, would know. I find I learn a lot about the world of barristers and human rights from reading ESR, and that is a good thing because – away from the cameras – that is what Amal does.
I know Amal hasn’t given interviews about her work, but you can read the CVs she has written online and we can hear what George and the press say about her. What’s wrong with someone from the business giving us the bigger picture from time to time? And besides, ESR is always careful to say that they don’t “know” anything.
ESR, if you read this – I find your comments really interesting.

She looks ethereal and a goddess. But Does anyone else think her face looks rounder, softer, fuller? I’m wondering if she disappeared from view during the last week in London whilst receiving facial treatment. She looked tired and worn down and very very thin in the face with prominent jawline and cheekbones in the last photos in NY, and she had some natural lines in the forehead and around her eyes when she smiled towards the end of her NY stay. This look reminds me of the shiny plasticy maniquin look of her wedding day, like she just can’t get that amazing gorgeous smile to go all the way past her cheeks and meet her eyes.

you must be looking into a magnifying glass Anna? Look at her pictures from arriving in Tokyo, hours before!! What you see in there is a super bad and heavy makeup, almost like the type they do for theater. Terrible indeed, so strong that gave her double lines that she does not have. This seems to be a different makeup person and a very different and bad makeup kit! look at Nati’s previous post! I doubt that Amal will get into plastic surgery, if she was that vain she would had done it already! She may be vain, indeed, but i doubt she would touch her face like that… at least, that is what i hope 😀

I am going to take back my comment on Amal’s hair… because i just realized, it was just a movie premiere and not a Golden Globe or Oscars, so her choice to let the hair loose and more casual, actually makes total sense! Even though the dress could do such events, had she gone with a more formal hair-due it would had perhaps been over-stated. The more i look at the pictures, the more i like the casual unpretentious hair-due 🙂

Amal glows in this beautiful dress . We get a glimpse at just how thin she truly is because her hip bones (pelvic) protrude through the dress. She’s very statuesque in this tightly fitted dress. I was looking at several archive pictures from early on (2013/2014) from this blog and although she has always been slim, she has definitely dropped 10/20 lbs. and is no doubt a lot slimmer. Amal is now “model thin” and “designer runway thin”. More so than before. The dress is definitely a head turner and eye catching. 🙂

Good point, Anne. Indeed, a barrister. However, hopefully she does not have to feel “pressure” to meet up to ‘old Hollywood’ by shifting to the entertainment world and way of thinking. It appears that perhaps she might be falling into this mentality. Perhaps she likes it and enjoys the high fashion, paparazzi, fame, and everything else that goes with it. She has dived into it right from the start and seems to enjoy the new role. Amal seems like she is becoming a little more like him and a little less of herself, which can happen in a marriage. She’s probably doing just enough to still work, but yet leaving herself available to travel, be a part of his work projects, and such.

George is worth 180 million, Amal is worth 2 million. George is a “powerhouse”, so I can foresee Amal slipping further & further away from the practice of Law, and taking more of a role of what these entertainment people will offer her; speaking at events, writing a book, wearing their designs, wearing their products, and the list goes on, doing a photo shoot for a magazine. And none of this is F R E E . She will reap rewards and get paid for all of it and then some. She’s definitely intrigued by all of it, otherwise we would not have seen her get sucked into the arena of meeting with Anna Wintour, Giambattista Valli, and more. These are all people that Amal has connected with through the entertainment industry (George). That’s why I stated in an earlier blog that I wish Amal would have said, “Thanks, but No Thanks” to them. In doing so, it would have been a polite way of keeping a division between her life as a barrister and the entertainment leeches who have alterior motives in mind.

Jaclyn, though I do agree on some level with you….and if I was judging her as me, I would probably say the same things…but if I judge her, wearing her shoes, then I don’t think there would be any judgement. As a struggling-working-professional (that’s me 😉 ) I would expect her to act accordingly to her life before GC which was as a barrister and what she had accomplished (little less or even more…can’t say anything about that), and continue her career and work and amaze us all with everything she does as a smart, intellectual person etc etc etc….with a real and prestigious job which is nothing like Hollywood and their bussiness….etc etc etc
But if I was in her shoes….I’d probably do the same thing because it is fun and adventurous and doesn’t require much of her mentally….that is not diminishing….who doesn’t want to travel the world for FREE!!!!who doesn’t want to eat at the best restaurants and stay at the most beautiful hotels and have the most gorgeous houses for FREE!!!meet all those people (and some are really interesting!!!!!!) and wear all that couture again for FREE!!!!Her life just went sky-rocketing higher than she could have ever accomplished if she was just a lawyer!!!!She is enjoying life’s best and she should and it’s free for her!!!!I wish I have the same opportunity 🙂 and I don’t mind her doing so (not that she would ever ask me or be interested in my opinion….lol).
She has a beautiful opportunity to enjoy life at it’s best…if she doesn’t make the best of that opportunity and continue practicing Law just because she studied law…then she is really stupid!!!!!People change every day. Just because you got a degree, doesn’t mean that you have to use only that and bypass every opportunity that doesn’t have to do with your occupation…flexibility is also evidence of great intelligence!!!!

Anna – this is a valid point. I think the issue some people have is not that she is taking these opportunities, but the fear that she is doing so at the expense of her career. So what, you ask? And that is a valid point. The problem is that she, and particularly George, made – and continue to make – a very ‘big deal’ out of the fact that Amal is a serious, hard-working, highly-motivated, highly-achieving, extraordinarily experienced professional. If enjoying these amazing !!free!! experiences gets in the way of that, some people may feel that she did not live up to the expectations which AC and GC themselves set.

Jealousy, it is my first explanation. I don’t understand why the DM doesn’t moderate its comments. You can see the same phenomenon with Kate or Pippa Middleton. Amal is an amazing person with humor. She is a successfull lawyer and has as husband George Clooney “the eternal bachelor”. There is so much love and passion between them. She is beautiful and has a great style.

Very “nice” to take such effort to steal the show from two fine youg actressess, it is their time now!! A bit more humble and more effortless dress and look would have been more appropriate for the occasion, she is not the lead actress and neither is her husband in this movie.

Niri, you do make a VERY valid point…. as much as i love seeing Amal, she definitively could had been more discrete and conscious, it is just a premiere and she is not an actress on it…In my opinion, producers should be more concerned with that, if i was the producer or marketer of the film i would had made a different decision. No one else besides the actors should be stealing the show. I hope their choice was assertive.

Nadia – I think the producers want any and all publicity they can get as the movie isn’t doing well at all at the box office (in fact, it appears to be tanking a bit). The movie had $190 million budget ($280 million including marketing costs). Ninety million for marketing!!! Wow!! That’s more than enough to pay for AC’s outfit and her first class flights…lol.

I like the dress, it’s quite stunning. I like her natural makeup, very beautiful on her. However, I’m not too crazy about the paler pink with the dress. That shade of yellow is hard to wear on olive skinned ladies (I know, I have her coloring). It’s not “our color”, and hard to match makeup with. To be honest, I’m not sure what color should have been chosen. I like her hair up, nice nice change. I do agree with Erika’s comments about her hair. Would have done something not quite so messy, but it’s nice to see a change.
I don’t know if Amal’s PR people read Nati’s blog. I”m all for thin…I try to keep thin. But she is TOO skinny at this point. I think if she just gained 10 lbs, she would look much heathier. She’s starting to look ill.

It is original, refreshing, inspiring and hopeful. So for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, it is a must go:) I found it disconcerting how movie critics can say bad things of a movie that has banked 51 millions on first nights in US alone!! I recommend it 🙂

Keep in mind, Amal is a successful & confident woman. With this in mind, if she is invited to something, she’s going to “deliver”. Meaning she is going to look her best & enjoy her style. She’s not thinking, “ok, what can I pick out to wear to remain undermining below the lead actor/actresses?” The same goes if someone is her stylist & helping her select a dress….they are certainly not thinking, “ok, let’s pick something that won’t bring out your best, so not to out stage actors/actresses.” Just the opposite in either case: bring out your best, shine, go glam, look gorgeous, feel/look your best. In a sense, this is what I was trying to explain earlier, she enjoys the entertainment world & all that goes with it (nothing wrong with that), but hoping she doesn’t get “lost” in the spotlight, by letting this dominate her great career & “spotlight” of being a barrister. Meaning it’s okay to “take a backseat” in the entertainment aspect of her life. Let that be George’s thing, in other words.
